Transcribing Greek

The terms ‘transcription’ and ‘transliteration’ are not interchangeable. While transliteration is mechanical letter substitution, transcription demands understanding of the orthographies of both the source and the destination language.

We can only understand how Greek roots are representated in English orthography when we know how the Romans transcribed Greek into Latin.
